INFO

Documenting the history of Iraqi theatre required compiling a rich collection of archival photographs, historical stage records, and performance accounts for the fourth edition of Henna Magazine, titled "Iraqi Theatre Archive." The core challenge lay in synthesizing these disparate, raw historical materials into a cohesive visual narrative while respecting the profound cultural legacy of the performance arts in Iraq.

PROBLEM

Standard editorial templates risked flattening the expressive, human nature of theatrical history into a rigid and clinical layout. Bridging the gap between the raw, tactile emotion of traditional stage performance and the structured precision required by modern magazine design presented a distinct creative challenge, as standard typography alone could not capture the organic energy of the archive.

SOLUTION

The art direction introduced custom, handmade Arabic calligraphy for the main titles, creating a dynamic contrast against structured, contemporary layout grids. This design choice infuses the pages with an expressive and tactile fluidity, successfully connecting the historic warmth of Iraqi theatre with modern editorial aesthetics to deliver an engaging cultural archive.
